What the doctor ordered
On April 29 Catholics celebrate
the feast of Saint Catherine of Siena. Catherine lived in 14th-century
Italy and was named a Doctor of the church in 1970. Doctors of the
church (like Augustine and Aquinas) are renowned for being, through
their life and holiness, great teachers of the faith.
Catherine felt a great
attachment to Jesus and a strong desire to spend her life closed off
in prayer. In a vision, Jesus told her, "The service you cannot
do me you must render your neighbors." Thus began an active life
of loving service to family and strangers alike. A healthy prescription
for us all.
