Get the air out

I love getting letters and e-mail from At Home with our Faith readers. They’re always so thoughtful and inspiring. Tom Kesinger of Davis, California inspired me with this message, just in time for Lent. He writes: How do you get the air out of an empty bottle? Each of us as parents has a very full and active life. There are times in my daily routine, however, where I found empty space. One example is my daily commute, which lasts 25 to 30 minutes. I am alone in my car, and too often my thoughts become negative. It was around New Year’s one year that I made a resolution to start saying my rosary during this commute time. It really helped! After almost 20 years of saying my rosary I can look back and know this has contributed to changing me.

I have found other empty times during the day, such as standing in line at the grocery store or at the bank. During such idle times I usually pray silently for a stranger standing close by, asking God to bless them and fill their day with goodness.

The answer to how to get the air out of that empty bottle is to fill the bottle with water. God is calling us to look for those empty spaces in our lives and resolve to fill them with his goodness. TJM
