Prayers for and about the family

Report card prayer

Don’t let me rant, Lord,

Don’t let me rave.

Don’t let the words "lazy," "scatterbrain," or "bonehead" leave my lips.

I know I’m angry, hurt, and stung by embarrassment, Lord.

We parents fear our children’s marks unmask our own missed

assignments and homework left undone.

We fear the tsk-tsk of teachers,

the arched eyebrows of principals,

the terror of the "permanent record."

But this report card is not about me,

it’s merely one clue to the truth of my child’s life right now.

Help me to learn about that truth,

to be a good student of my child’s life and times,

and to help this student find balance and focus and purpose again.

I know there’s only one "permanent record" in our lives,

and that is minded by you,

who are all knowing,

all understanding,

and all compassion.

Thank you for grading on a curve.

Amen
